چکیده

Dr. Phyllis T. Johnson, of the Entomology Research Division, U. S. Department of Agriculture, Washington D. C, most kindly invited me to describe a new bird-flea, material of which was found in the collections of the U. S. National Museum. The specimens of the new flea were collected from the nest of a barn swallow and are part of a series which constitutes the first record of fleas from the North American subspecies of this host. It is a subspecies of Ceratophyllus affinis Nordberg, 1935, and the host record is a valuable indication as regards the true host of the little-known nominate subspecies. I am much indebted to the authorities of the U. S. National Museum for the donation of one pair of paratypes of the new flea to the British Museum collection of fleas at Tring.

Standardized North American Marsh Bird Monitoring Protocol

—Little is known about the population status of many marsh-dependent birds in North America but recent efforts have focused on collecting more reliable information and estimates of population trends. As part of that effort, a standardized survey protocol was developed in 1999 that provided guidance for conducting marsh bird surveys throughout North America such that data would be consistent amo...

Supergenes: The Genomic Architecture of a Bird with Four Sexes

Supergenes are clusters of physically linked, co-evolving genes that often control complex traits. A new study clarifies the origin and possible fate of a fascinating supergene that determines the coloration and mating behavior of a widespread North American bird.

Autumnal Bird Migration Observed from Ships in the Western North Atlantic Ocean

The western north Atlantic Ocean constitutes a major route for autumnal migrants moving between eastern North America and the Caribbean or South America. Some shorebirds have long been known to use this route (Lincoln, 1939; Hagar, 1966; Palmer, 1968; McNeil and Burton, 1973), and recently Drury and Nisbet (1964) and Nisbet (1970) have stated that the Blackpoll Warbler (Dendroica striata) proba...

Climate change in our backyards: the reshuffling of North America's winter bird communities.

Much of the recent changes in North American climate have occurred during the winter months, and as result, overwintering birds represent important sentinels of anthropogenic climate change. While there is mounting evidence that bird populations are responding to a warming climate (e.g., poleward shifts) questions remain as to whether these species-specific responses are resulting in community-...

Conservation Status of North American Birds in the Face of Future Climate Change

Human-induced climate change is increasingly recognized as a fundamental driver of biological processes and patterns. Historic climate change is known to have caused shifts in the geographic ranges of many taxa and future climate change is expected to result in even greater redistributions of species. As a result, predicting the impact of climate change on future patterns of biodiversity will g...
